Sound in Film

The four categories of sound are: dialogue, music, sound effects and narration.

Discussion of Hitchcock

Hitchcock saw the marriage of sound and image; in Blackmail we hear the word Knife repeated over and over in the main characters head (due to her guilt of murdering her husband). This subjective use of dialogue (non real) gets us inside the characters head and is mirrored by the actions presented in the imagery.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvlyQaJbJgs (knife)

Hitchcock also pioneered the use of Asynchronous sound where the images and sound do not match up directly, but rather in a way that makes both more interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzAoCsvvFBY (39 steps: Asynchronous Sound)

Use of Sound: Raging Bull fight sequences
Scorsese used sound to emphasize the violence of the fight.  Punches sound like explosions,
@ 1:19 sound disappears, camera widens, almost to freeze frame and then…
Chaos ensues, sound returns, crowd, camera flashes matching each hit, pace changes, blood splashes, Again @ 2:19 the dramatic change of pace and sound
